CFL Faculty Explore the Spiritual and Cultural Legacy of Putuo Temple

October 29, 2025 – A vibrant cultural exchange event organized by the Centre for Foreign Languages (CFL) took place at the serene Putuo Temple in Zhuhai, a renowned Buddhist landmark nestled in the heart of the city. The temple, known for its architectural grandeur and tranquil ambiance, provided an ideal backdrop for fostering cross-cultural dialogue.

Prof. Shawn Wang’s Insightful Guidance

A highlight of the visit was a special lecture by Prof. Shawn Wang from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS). Prof. Wang, an expert in East Asian religious studies, provided participants with a rich historical context, explaining the temple’s architectural symbolism, its role in local Buddhist practice, and its connections to broader cultural traditions.

“Putuo Temple is not just a place of worship—it’s a living museum of Chinese spirituality and art,” said Prof. Wang. “From the eight pillars at the front gate to the rhythmic chants of monks, every detail tells a story.”

Cultural Reflections and Participant Experiences

Foreign interns expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage with Chinese culture. “I’ve studied Buddhist temples in books, but being here makes everything so real,” shared Zahra BENMEKA from Morocco. “The peacefulness, the incense, the stories—it’s unforgettable.”

Others noted the temple’s role as a bridge between past and present. “Seeing young monks use smartphones alongside ancient scriptures was fascinating,” remarked Emilio ALONSO from Spain. “It shows how tradition adapts to modern life.”

A Heartfelt Thank-You

The CFL program extends its deepest appreciation to Prof. Shawn Wang for his generous contributions, which elevated the visit into a truly enriching educational experience. Special thanks also go to all participants—faculty and staff—whose curiosity and enthusiasm made the day memorable.
