Since 1998, the mission of TIRF (The International Research Foundation for English Language Education) has focused on improving the global landscape of language education. Through engaging in various research-based activities, TIRF has demonstrated its continued commitment to positively influencing the lives of its stakeholders.
TIRF has produced numerous publications addressing critical areas in language education and offers flagship grant opportunities such as the Doctoral Dissertation Grants (DDG) program, which has made 208 awards to individuals from nearly 30 countries.

Learn from leading experts, researchers, and practitioners in the field of AI and language education.
Jun Liu is President of TIRF and Rector of City University of Macau. Previously, he served as Vice Provost at Stony Brook University and held leadership roles at Georgia State University and the University of Arizona. A Past President of TESOL (2006–2007) and current Vice President of TCSOL, he has published extensively on intercultural communication, teacher education, and second language writing. He has delivered over 100 speeches in 30+ countries and received the James E. Alatis Award (2016) and Georgia Governor’s Award (2015).
Professor Chen Zhong is an internationally renowned expert in computer science and Dean of the School of AI and Liberal Arts at Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU). He received his PhD from Peking University (PKU) in 1989 and was promoted to full professor in 1995, serving PKU for over 30 years in roles including Founding Dean of the School of Software and Microelectronics and Director of the Metaverse Technology Institute. His research spans Domain-specific Software Engineering, Network and Information Security, and AI & Blockchain Technology. He has published over 180 papers and 5 academic books, supervised more than 150 graduate students, and received over 20 national research grants. He is a Fellow of the China Computer Federation, Vice Chairman of the China Open Source Software Promotion Union, and a recipient of the 5th China Youth Science and Technology Award.
Mariano leads AI strategy for language learning and assessment at the British Council, researching NLP applications in language assessment, guiding AI adoption, and promoting AI literacy. With over a decade of experience in areas like grammatical error correction, automated test generation, and difficulty prediction, he has published extensively in top NLP conferences and is a regular speaker and reviewer. He is also a visiting scholar at the University of Reading and the University of Cambridge.
Yu LU is Deputy Director of the School of Educational Technology at Beijing Normal University (BNU) and Director of the AI Lab at the Advanced Innovation Center for Future Education (AICFE). He has authored over 100 papers, serves as associate editor for the International Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education and other journals, and is PC Co-Chair for the AIED conference as well as PC member/track chair for conferences like EDM, AAAI, ACL, and IJCAI. His research focuses on AI and education.
Yueting Xu is a Professor at South China Normal University, researching teacher education with a focus on teacher assessment literacy, GenAI in teacher education, teacher identity and emotions, and parental involvement. She has published in leading journals such as Teaching and Teacher Education, TESOL Quarterly, Language Teaching Research, and System. She has been recognized on Stanford University’s “World’s Top 2% Scientists” list (2022–2025), Elsevier’s “Highly Cited Chinese Researchers” list (2020–2025), and CNKI’s “National Top 1% Highly Cited Scholar” list (2024–2025). She has also delivered over 100 lectures and workshops to teachers worldwide in the past five years.
